Children’s Event

Each year during the Canadian Tire Mitchell’s Bay Open bass tournament, a children’s program is held as part of the weekend’s events. This fun event is sponsored by the Mitchell’s Bay Area Association and various community sponsors.

The children gather at the Mitchell’s Bay Marine Park clubhouse in the morning and conclude the day at the stage as the tournament anglers are beginning to come in for their weigh in. The children whom are between the age of 11 and 14 (grade 6-8 participate in an activity-based educational experience culminating with presentations on the tournament stage. The children participate in a morning of fishing on Lake St. Clair on pontoon boats (under the guidance of boat captains, angler coaches and MBAA volunteers), a biodiversity tour of the Mitchell’s Bay area trails and wetlands (led by the Sydenham Field Naturalists), a barbeque and a tour of the live release boat in action as the weigh-ins get underway. The event is supervised by adult volunteers from the MBAA. The safety of the children is of utmost importance. Participants receive a tournament t-shirt, prizes and their own fishing gear to take home.

This event promotes the sport of angling to our children and helps build an appreciation for the natural habitat and ecosystem surrounding Mitchell’s Bay and Lake St. Clair.

Feedback from this event has always been positive from the children and their families. We are so pleased to be able to showcase our local fishing and nature activities to the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
